Where did the news go?

I have started to notice a decrease in the quality of newspapers, especially with the Chicago Tribune. For the past few days, I have noticed less news being covered. The front page still has one or two major head lines, but its when I get to the second or third page I have a problem. On the 3rd page of the October 7Th, 2008 edition, there was an article about a junior league football coach who after shoving a kid was forced to quit his coaching position. And in the October 9Th edition, on page 3 the main headline was A sober idea from Google. This article is about googles email serves adding 5 math problems, that you have to answer within 60sec before you send an email. If you answer one or more wrong the email does not send, the purpose of the math problems are to stop people from sending drunk e-mails that will come back to haunt you latter. That article was on the 3rd page of the Chicago Tribune. The Tribune has the Largest reporting team in the Midwest, but they can only fill two pages with quality news. What has happened to newspapers? I think less people then ever are getting their news from papers. Instead they get there news from the Internet and TV.

I totally agree, the other day one of the headlines on the front page read "Neck Beards, Are they in" or something like that.

I am starting to notice this too. I The more I see the Sun-Times and the trib, the less news I see. While important news reguarding our country is listed. It is normally covered very briefly. The local newspapers are beginning to focus more on human-interest stories and stories that relate to chicago. I think the same can be said for local news broadcasts. With the current situation in our country, the local media needs to focus less on neck beards, and more on the real problems Chicagoans and Americans are facing.

You're all on to something big: a major shift in modern media. Both newspapers mentioned are part of a major trend across the USA. Newspapers are cutting staff, cutting length, and cutting paper as their stock prices continue to sink.

Think about how else these newspapers are changing in terms of article length and opinion versuis news.

Provocative post, LHG.

It's ironic how timely this topic is right now. I was wandering from blog to blog and ended up on this old post by Luke. We discussed how newspapers are cutting out more and more. The Sun-Times looks thinner and thinner everyday, like an eating disorder. And now, the timing is perfect. The Tribune has just declared bankruptcy. I agree with Mr. Bolos that this is all part of this trend. I honestly feel that newspapers will soon be old news. People are watching more tv and spending more time on the internet. Why read a boring old newspaper when you can watch John Stewart tell the news in a funny and upbeat manor? i believe that this decline we are noticing, in newspapers will only continue. But now I have to go, the Daily Show is on.
